The Crossroads of the Aether
Hi all. I am brand new here and to steampunk. I literally decided about 4 days ago to maybe start delving into this. Have a few scattered friends who seem to like it but don't know much myself.
Was rather hoping that maybe the good people of this place could help me learn more about this rather unique world that I seemed to have never noticed.

Permalink Reply by Madame Epiphany on October 10, 2012 at 5:08pm I would love to, but I'm only about four days "old" on here myself!
Welcome fellow freshman!
Permalink Reply by Lt.Col. Wilhelm Heizeltroff Ret. on October 10, 2012 at 5:26pm Thanks. Glad to know I'm not the only new person here. There are so many options and I don't really know the traditions or acceptable behavior here. Coming from a medieval re-creation background I'm used to an informal setting but with a lot of the titles and honorifics being things you can't just use without "earning" them.
Is steampunk similar or am I correct in thinking it's more of "Be what ya want with what ever title you want" type of setting?
Permalink Reply by Deborah Clark on October 12, 2012 at 12:09am Hello Wilhelm, welcome! I too am new, and although I have been interested in this genre for years have been more into vintage until now.
I am currently working out characters for myself (and family), with the aim to go to a convention in Queensland next year (they are few and far bewteen in Australia it seems). In the meantime I keep learning and researching, reading novels, steam punk mags, blogs etc, thrifting for items I think will be useful for costumes and also researching costumes and blogging about it all! Everyone here seems lovley and happy to share - I am sure the journey will be wonderful!
Think Victorian science fiction projected into an alternative world of your own making...a wild weird west ala "Cowboys and Aliens". Think Jules Vern, Edgar Allen Poe, Etc. Etc. Have fun...:-}
Permalink Reply by Prof. Sebastian Fate on October 10, 2012 at 9:56pm I suspect most Steampunk titles are chosen to reflect an assumed character . One of our members has recently gone from Miss to Dr. to reflect changes in her real life .
My back story is connected with the Professor Fate of ' Great Race ' fame . Having chosen to regard the film as a documentary my Professor claims a hereditary title originating in the lost Balkan kingdom . All good clean fun .
Permalink Reply by James Murray on October 11, 2012 at 1:51am Ahh, the new steampunker. Me not so long ago, and I posted a discussion similar to this one, albeit I had even less of an idea than you. You are not the first, and you are definitely not the last.
Discussions like this always draw a variety of responses, but do not be discouraged if some do not reply, as I have said, it is a discussion oft posted before.
To skip passing on all the wonderful information I was given, and passing it off as my own ,check out my first discussion post, I received a plethora of advice, insights and redirections. If you are interested here,
Other than that, welcome to the wonder of Steampunk, I do hope you enjoy your time here, there is so much to see, read, watch, learn and do.
So shrug off that jet pack, wipe the soot from your cheeks, hoist up your goggles, and sit down for a nice cup of tea and a chat. Or perhaps you would enjoy something stronger?
Permalink Reply by James Murray on October 11, 2012 at 2:08am Actually, I did just reread this discussion from the above link, and it is a little hard to follow now, as some of the members have deleted their accounts, and thier replies disappear with them (damn you Wally H!) There are still some brilliant answers in there, but the thread can be a little hard to follow.
Permalink Reply by Shahbanoo Pantea on October 11, 2012 at 2:37am Curses to that Wally H!
Also, reading this.... I'm still convinced you were trying to pull my leg. But I digress :)
Permalink Reply by James Murray on October 11, 2012 at 3:08am Absolutely not dear Pantea, it was truly what I thought when entering the world of steampunk. Thankyou for sticking it out and seeing me through, you helped change my world view. Do talk to her Mr Heizeltroff, she is a wonderful muse.
Permalink Reply by Shahbanoo Pantea on October 11, 2012 at 3:31am You know, looking back on this conversation, it's hard to imagine there was a time when we were still "new" to the Empire. If I recall, I had actually only been on here about two weeks by the time you came on.
Now I'd swear you were on here and doing Steampunk longer than I was. I'm quite proud to say I picked you up on the spot, as you've proven an friend far beyond the constraints material and mortal value. :)
Likewise, I hope you too Mr. Heizeltroff find your niche with us so that down the line, we can have these conversations when new members come in and say "Oh, I remember when...."
Sadly, for the evening I must turn out. **tilts head a bit and moves fingertips to brow** I bid you all a good evening, morning, or afternoon - whichever suits your current situation. I look forward to speaking with you all again when I return.

Let me offer myself up for "brain-picking" as I call it. James (Murray that is) can vouch for me, I am quite helpful (though a bit off-topic at times, but it can happen to anyone!)
I always love seeing new people getting into the genre. I know it can be intimidating at first, but if there's anything I can do to help, let me know (you can either respond here, drop me a comment on my wall, or send me a friend request and leave me a message)
Permalink Reply by Deborah Clark on October 12, 2012 at 12:01am Hello there , I too am new. I have been into vintage for many years, especially 40s, and have always loved diesel and steam punk without knowing what they were called. Now instead of feeling odd, I know there are others like myself and am comforted! Looking forward to learning and exploring xxx
