The Steampunk Empire

The Crossroads of the Aether

I think most every steampunk has a special place in their hearts for Firefly, Joss Whedon's short-lived space western with its anachronistic mix of technology, costumes and cultures. So how happy was I when this appeared on my TV screen last night:

That's right: Nathan Fillion's new show Castle did a less than subtle homage to Firefly!

The gun and coat are spot on, while the shirt and pants are close enough to make a fan happy. It seems Castle is dressing as a "Space Pirate" for Halloween. His teenage daughter then quips, "didn't you wear that five years ago?" Ouch!

You can watch the whole episode for free over at www.abc.go.com. The episode is about goths and wannabe vampires, and there's a fun Buffy reference to boot.

Enjoy!

Saw it. Loved it. My wife and I are huge fans of Firefly. "May have been on the losing side, still not convinced it was the wrong side."
Defeat lasts longer than victory.
My bad, he's a space cowboy, not a space pirate as I wrote above.

Phineus, that's one of my favorite lines from the show. There was a lot more depth to Firefly than most TV science fiction. I think it resonated with people on a number of levels.
Well he's a smuggler and has a ship and a crew and is wanted by the law, so probably more pirate than cowboy.
Ok, my wife told me there was yet another Easter egg in the episode and I think you can see it in the picture. Evidently the catalyzer that was a main element in the "Out of Gas" episode of Firefly was on the bookshelf behind Nathan when he first shows up in the Mal outfit. I'm kind of convinced... What do you think?

That sure looks like that thing he was carrying around.
yes, yes it is.
This was a fantastic episode! We have "Castle" night at our home on Monday nights. It's quite fun.
My husband and I are a part of the 76th, which is one of the other regiments for the Browncoats. Suffice to say we love Firefly and really wish we had cable to see such an awesome sight. Thanks for posting guys it made our day!
Firefly the series and the movie Serenity are probably our current favorite productions for all of the right reasons. Just last night we were gifted with the entire Firefly series on a four dvd set. And yes we have been watching V but I must admit I didn't realize that Morena Baccarin was the alien leader. I guess the short hair threw me off. We hope Joss Whedon creates shows more tv in a similar genre like Firefly.
NEW NEWS! I'm sure this has made it to the Empire somewhere, but I can't find it, so I'll take it apon my self to spread the word just in case.

Castle is doing a Steampunk episode! It will be titled 'Punked' and should air Monday, OCT 11th.

Most of the Steampunk costuming seen on screen will be provided by makers from our community such as Brute Force Leather, Blond Swan, and Pendragon Costumes' own Mad Girl.

Nathan will be totaly Punked-out.

This was the first episode of Castle I ever caught; I've been hooked ever since. I just started watching the Firefly DVDs to get a sense of it's steampunk elements (after joining these forums a couple days ago), did a quick Google on the idea, and it brought me right back here. Kinda reassuring that I'm not pulling these associations out of my @$$.
