The Crossroads of the Aether

Ok its tirade time.
Airship Captains.
Dose everyone have to be an airship captain, come on people. Its like when little kids play cowboys and Indians but all the kids pretend to be the sheriff. The world of steampunk is filled with rolls of colorful adventure. Why for Gods sake why dose ninety percent of the people creating a persona have to be an airship captain!
Ok, now that half of you hate me I get the other half too.
Women airship captains.
Yes I know that history tells us their have been women captains/ pirates ect. You can find a list of them on wikipedia. You, can, find, a, list, of ,them! Meaning, that their was so few of them that, you can list them.
You would never know it around this place, were you cant hurl a dead cat without hitting a dozen airship captains in a skirt!
Yes, I know that this is fiction/fantasy but make it real people. Its also trendy to put women in roles that has them stronger then men. Despite the unreality of women action rolls the popularity of Angelina Jolie has nothing to do with her kicking butt. It has to do with her butt!
Please, please, people lets keep it real. Use some of that imagination and come up with personas that haven’t been done to death by hundreds of others before you. Ladies, you are women not men if you really have a new take on a women stepping into a males role I would love to see it. BUT we cant all be the sheriff can we. We need all the roles that women fill in the real world too. It makes the world of steampunk as full and colorful as the real world.
Now, as if I haven’t pissed off everyone in the Empire yet.
Can I tell you how tired I am about anything to do with vampires and werewolves,,,

Permalink Reply by Mrs. Emeline Warren on July 6, 2012 at 7:52am hmm. Having been involved in actual living history for more years than I care to admit, I've never run into folks wantting to be nobles! That is more the domain of the SCA, and even there regulations exist to achieve knighthood, titles, etc through accomplishments. But the SCA is not 'living history'. I served in many regiments, a pikeman and musketeer in an English Civil War unit, and campfollower (not a bad word!) who did all the hauling, cooking and cleaning for a regiment of Brits, and then Hessians. There were officers, of course, appointed or elected, but 99.9% of the crowd were private soldiers. They were into the re-enacting, research and education and probably had more fun doing events every weekend than folks might think.. (why else give up vacations or weekends to wear wool in 90+ degree heat, and camp out in bug infested fields? Ah, those were the days!) The main dif in living history and Steampunk/LARP/Cosplay/Ren Faires, etc is the agreed-upon adherence to regulations, uniform, civilian clothing styles and military drills and order, as well as conducting 'reenactments' of actual events. Gettysburg's going on this weekend and I'm sorry to be missing it! And living history was also part of my job when working historic sites and parks for the Nat'l park Service. But Steampunk is done more to amuse ourselves and not educate the public, both approaches having their own perks!.

Permalink Reply by Drew Heyen on July 7, 2012 at 9:17am The character I most often portray is "Herr Spinne" a "topologist", from Texas, specializing in "knot theory". Do a search for Topologists in the empire and see how many there are.
