Waltons World Masters – Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars

23/Jan/2013 - 23/Jan/2013 Venue: : Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars have risen like a phoenix out of the ashes of war and won the hearts of legions of fans around the world with their uplifting songs of hope, faith and joy. The group is a potent example of the redeeming power of music and the ability of the human spirit to persevere through unimaginable hardship and emerge with optimism intact. Forced to flee the country during its brutal civil war, the band formed in refugee camps across the border in Guinea. Having entertained their fellow residents for several years, they were brought to the attention of the wider world through the acclaimed 2006 documentary Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars. But the group doesn't have to rely on a humbling back-story to get people's attention. Their impossibly upbeat sound, drawing on highlife and reggae, is simply irresistible, a life-affirming riposte to life under the gun and the grenade. From their humble beginnings, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars have recorded three great albums, performed on some of the world’s most prestigious concert stages and matured into one of Africa's top touring and recording groups. Price: €16-€34

My grandmother's maiden name was McCarron, and the other side is Fields. The latter is a pretty rare name in Ireland, as I have researched. Interesting. She's also a bit French, like 10% or so. Perhaps that's where Fields came from.

My grandma is 100% Irish also, and from Cork too! well, half anyway. The other half of her family was from Moate. I love to learn about my heritage, it's fun to keep up on the times of the homes lands :)

Hey there fellow citizens of the Steampunk Empire and Ladies and Gentelmen of the Irish Steampunk Society. I have only just joined this site and community so wanted to come straight here and join this group, say hi, introduce myself and ask you fine fellows a question.

Im living in rural remote kerry and work's thin down here so going to get back into leather work (and crafting/creating in general). When I was living in england years back, I used to make all kinds of stuff but some of my favourite stuff was armour and gear for bikers and LARPers. Thats the area I'd like to get back into but it all comes doown to demand I reckon. Like, most of the Steampunks I have known liked to make as much of their own stuff as possible. We seem to be quite a talented crowd in general, eh boys. lol

I'd love to know guys, do any of you buy your gear? Like, from a crafter's point of view, would there be much interest here in Ireland if I were to have a crack at making some stuff? I know I can cater to the rest of the world but I'd like to know what kind of market there is here in Ireland. If I can make anything decent and desirable, I'd like to get your opinions and see you guys get first pick.

I'd like to know if your at all interested or if you think there'll be any interest here.

Thanks a million. : )

Cro.

The Hunt Museum in Limerick has an Steampunk exhibition launching in October and it's open to all!

Steampunk objects were created by students at the University of Limerick based on objects in our collection and from October 11th, they'll be residing steampunkily beside the original (and somewhat ancient) objects on which they were based!

The exhibition launches at 4pm on Tuesday 11th October and is free and open to all. If you'd like more information on the exhibition or visiting The Hunt, we'll be happy to help you out - just email us at education@huntmuseum.com!
