The Steampunk Empire

The Crossroads of the Aether

/end cheesy mood

What all has everyone been working on lately? Any cool projects in mind? Any freshly completed?

I'm working on my first corset commission... now I'm an Amateur with a capital A for my newbness, but it's for a friend so she'll forgive me if it's not perfect (nor is she taking a huge finical gamble with my skills, worst comes the boning and the busk can be cut out and I can start over).

I have a few spots left on a scarf to stitch up, I do all by hand until my machine's fixed, but I'm getting to like hand stitching. I also have a a vest I've sketched out and am going to start on when we can move into our new studio this month. *squee* and on a side note I've ordered a dress form, so no more mirror pictures or stabbing myself with pins... well, LESS pins at least. :P
Dress forms rock. I asked for one from my mom as a bday gift back when I couldn't afford one... now several years later I'm thinking of buying another

I am new to steampunk, but not to sewing, and I have never had a dress form. With the tight fitting clothes I can see where it would be handy to use one. Any recommendations what to get and where to buy? Also, is there a thread with pattern/fashion recommendations? Congrats on your new form and pinhole-less state.

Try the group Gilded Guttersnipes...they have great ideas on inexpensive ways to steam up an outfit.  Also another group, Steampunk Stitiching Association.

I bought my dress form from Joannes fabric...standard style... it was about $100 on sale.

Welcome!

I've recently come into possession of a miniature model ship that I am trying to make into a hat. It will hopefully be part of a new outfit I'm making for myself. The ship itself needs to be disassembled, repainted and aged - am also thinking about trying to stitch up some new sails for her.

Cool! Ship hats can be wonderfully whimsical... I really like this one, (yes, I know, it's "goth" more than steampunk), I think it's quite well done.

ghost ship?

Haha just realized this post is 2 years old... Oh well.

No problem, age is a totally irrelevant concept.

I loved your link! Thanks

I'm currently working on a little something for Continuum inspired by the old Space 1889 roleplaying game. Not having the physique for common soldiery, I'm endeavouring to create an officer of the Her Majesty's Syrtis Major Regiment. So far it's going OK. The jacket has been cut, various buttons and buckles have been procured and the helmet completed bar the chinstrap. As an added bit of steampunkery I'm attempting to create a mechanical hand using a diving glove as a base.

Pictures as they get taken.
I am currently working on 3 corsets; 2 are historical for the most part, 1 is a modern take with lacing and buckles. My hands are about to be very sore when I start to set all the grommets! I have 2 apron bustles in the works, 1 of which matches an above mentioned corset and a Victorian walking skirt. My sewing machine has been busy!

Katie: You will love your dress form, I never knew how much I would love mine until I ordered one, now I don't know how I sewed without it for so long.
Dear Angela, I have copied your comment regarding the dress form and have emailed it to my husband. Christmas is only a few weeks away! ;-)
:) indeed it will make a wonderful hint!
I just finished modding a pair of boots for the wife unit.
she complained that they were too tight and hard to pull on and the laces were starting to pull the holes.
I added darts of textured leather. I think its makes a nice contrast, and reinforced the lacing holes.
good as new.
