Die hard tabletop role-playing game players often forget that no system is needed for something to truly to be considered "Live Action Role-Playing". It is extremely common for cosplaying steampunks…Continue

heard about something called wayfarer out here, they apparantly organize different larps, no clue if they ever did steampunk, or if they're still active, trying to get more info, maybe can reach someone there and get some pointers at the very least
I can play that head organizer role if need be in general, but it is an unenviable position to be sure. I find that in such a position one ends up being expected to do everything, which is never good. But for sure let me know what you find out so far as a group in Kingston
I'd start one myself, but not much of a head-organizer-guy, and never larped before, though I am going with friends as a guest to their next larp event to check it out, they're more into the medieval fantasy genre though
If there isn't one in Kingston maybe someone needs to start one. I'm a bit far away but I'd be interested in helping to do so. My plans to run an SP LARP are on the back burner right now, but I can bring um out again at any time. Just a matter of the finishing the rules and finding enough players.
anyone know if there's any steampunk larp around Kingston NY? there's enough old 19th century buildings and old factories, you'd think it'd be a great town for it
Just a comment on the LARP thing. I'm about the same age and have played various LARPs for about half my life. Those LARPers who truly impress me are the ones who can play their characters so convincingly that you'd swear they were just being themselves.
I personally enjoy the intrigue, the challenge, the politics and in particular the combat (physical combat mind you). I'm also impressed by those who can actually fight well and achieve great in game things without having to hide behind/use "skills" built into the rules that allow them to do things they can't actually do (Example: a character who has the skill "hide" or "stealth" and is somehow able to sneak up on me in plain view in broad daylight, and I'm just supposed to ignore them. Yeachh. They'd better hope they don't show up at a night event I'm at, I actually have taken the time to really learn the real life stealth skill.) Mind you there are some things you need those rules for like magic missile and the other stuff people can't actually do in real life.
Sorry about the rant.
I like the comment about people making following the rules and looking so natural that you'd hardly know there is a rule system. That's when things truly get fun. A good, well balanced, and well thought out rule system is extremely important. And LARP just really isn't LARP without actual participation and interaction.
By the way I love the intro to this group too, while on the subject. It just says it almost perfectly.
I love LARPing, done it for years. I'm lookin' to start a Steam Punk LARP in my neck of the woods, Upstate NY. Just need some like-minded people to help make it happen.
Hello All! I'm a Seattle steampunk person, and my first introduction to LARP was with Rise of Aester, a steampunk LARP that started out here in the PNW and has been expanding east and south over the last couple of years.
For those in the Baltimore/DC area that may be interested my wife and I are looking for those interested in a steampunk LARP. We have the rules almost finished (a few skills to write up) and are looking to resume playtesting.
Definition of LARP or LRP. This can be found elsewhere, but perhaps it's more useful to say what it's NOT. let's have a friendly debate?
COSPLAY. Now I've met several of these if the "regular" SF field and some living history (hawk, spit, combat re-enactor for several decades) re-enactors and/or traders. These (again, my UK experience) put on the costume, but make no attempt at the language, mannerisms or any type of role-play. They are a 21st c person who just happens to wear a costume. They seem incapable of making the leap to being a larper. I had the Dalek Builders Guild at some events. Even had the record for most Daleks in one spot (32) for 4 whole days! I tried to get them to ACT like Daleks, patrol, report, give and take orders. BUT they couldn't! I even wanted to stage a battle against some 1970's re-enactors as UNIT) in the grounds of Bovington Tank Museum. A larper has to get into a character like an actor. When in pirate (sky or other) mode, nothing is easier than to give free reign to some of my more, um, aspects of me nature and to stop talking in a perpetual whisper.
There is usually for form of rules, format, understanding, culture or systems in place to make a LARP work, particularly where weapons are involved. Sometimes a group can make it look so natural that the structure is not apparent.
Roleplayers and tabletop gamers. Well I'm both, with over 30 years under me belt. Few get "involved".
So, my definition of a LARPER is "one who actively participates and interacts as a character in a specific formatted event." How's that?
