Major Myers,

Welcome to the world of Pre-Flexner Arcane Medicine & Technology. I'm sure you will enjoy the freedom this brings.

Greetings!

I am a Physical Medicine & Rehab doc in the US Army.  Let me just say that some of the prosthetics for amputees are "high tech", and yet some of them have changed little since the 19th century!

Our humble community is growing!

I would like to take this time to personally thank each of you for your support of the Steampunk Medical Journal. As our community continues to grow, I can only hope our knowledge does as well. Please feel free to add anything you find of value to here. Nothing is considered too taboo to us here at the SMJ. From simple procedures such as what proper stitch to use after surgery completion to genetic modification and hybrid creation.

We are the innovators of invention and the dreamers of what can be! Set your imagination free, we do not judge here!

Again I humbly thank each of you for your contributions to this community.

Regards,

Dr. A.M.N.E. DeVille M.D.,PhD.,D.Sc.,M.S.

Thomas,

We're not weird, we're just......imaginative. :-D. Welcome to our little slice of heaven dear!

Sky Marshall,

You flatter me again with your praises. To be quite honest with you I had no formal education in the arts, in fact it was math that lead me to my artistic ability. Geometry is a fascinating subject and with a little imagination and understanding of perspective and angles you can go a long way. I also share your passion for the Martial Arts, I used to practice some myself until I sustained injuries that no longer allow my body to contort certain ways, but I still find it fascinating. I love watching the martial experts move and watching the muscles ripple under the skin. Its inspiring to say the least.

I do not know what to say, you leave me speechless Sky Marshall. I find it such a great honor that you would bestow a gift like this on me. I can't believe no one has even thought of this concept before. It will be a brilliant addition to the Empire! I do agree that it will be small at first and when our population begins to blossom so shall the Aeromedical Squad. Again sir you leave me speechless with this fantastic idea, I cannot praise you enough on your own brilliance and ingenuity. I find it wonderful that you are always looking for ways to improve the needs of the Empire. Brava dear Sky Marshall, brava.

I have actually put forth a discussion on the matter with DaVinci, I want to see what others in the Empire say on the matter. DaVinci has always held special place in my heart, if not scientifically then artistically. As I was improving my artistic skills I would often find myself staring at his artwork for hours on end, trying to see how he would create certain details here and there. A brilliant man who would have been an amazing addition to our society had he lived today.

I am happy that I can be a muse to you dear Sky Marshall so that you may continue to better serve the Empire. Now as far as the denied nature of Man I find it quite visible in every day life. Man is sometimes denied even the simplest of pleasures because it goes against the propriety of Society's standards. His curiosity, his lust, his needs are denied to him and if he goes outside the social strata to seek them he is considered a deviant and either ridiculed or thrown in jail. It honestly disgusts me the way the world is run as a Nanny State. What I mean by Nanny State, if you ever had a nanny, she would always say what you can and cannot do.

Now while I feel there are some truly deviant people in the world, however begrudging a man because he prefers the company male to females is absurd. There should be one basic law by which all live. "Do what ye will an' harm it none'. Do as you will in this life so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. If someone is hurt you are responsible for compensation. Simple. Effective. Let those who can't comprehend things in moderation kill themselves off, no need for them to sully the gene pool. Oh my I seem to have gone off ranting again, I apologize.

Ah yes I remember when they came out with the Difference Engine and how n utter failure it was. I'm surprised you actually have a working one Sky Marshall, then again you are full of surprises. I will honestly say I have never traveled by airship. I'm a bit how shall I put this, wary of heights. Always traveled by water or steamcar.

I do wish you well on your journeys throughout the Empire. I'm afraid I have to cut this short. Places to go and experiments to tend to. Please do keep in touch throughout your journey. It is so hard to find someone with an iota of intelligence to talk to nowadays. Most people just ramble on and on about weapons and the such. Take care Sky Marshall.

Regards,

Dr. A.M.N.E. DeVille M.D.,PhD.,D.Sc.,M.S.

Ahh, a group for doctors! Although I'm just a Med student, it's always good to talk with other Docs, heh, if for nothing else, the sense of humor will be more in line :) Doctors have a rather...odd sense of humor.

Dr. DeVille,

Once again you surprise with exceedingly wonderfully talents not only in the sciences but the arts! I wish that I too were so gifted in the skill of drawing but alas I have no traditional artistic skill… The Sky Marshall is entirely right angles and numbers. My art is the Martial Art, the Art of War, and I am very good at it, for I have honed it through the cold calculation of Science. However I do not love the sword for its brightness or gleam, I would just as well put it away for it is a nasty business that is sadly seemingly necessary, I do not love the sword for its brightness or gleam, I love only that which it defends. My preferred art, my preferred science is the Science of all things, and thus I am vastly keen on your illustrations. Such brilliant imaginations you have!!!

I am currently in the District of Columbia away from my home and my Headquarters in Hampton Roads. So very impressed am I by your talents that I am securing funding for the construction of the very first Medical Airship…the HMS DeVille… to be built at Newport News Shipbuilding. They build good ships there… at a profit if they can, at a loss if they must, but always good ships. Upon commissioning, completion, operational testing, and tactical evaluation of this new Airship, I shall order the organization, training, and equipage of an Aeromedical Squadron of these first, agile, and smaller Medical Airships. The crews and personnel will consist of a contingent of Sky Pilots and Flight Mechanics as well as Flying Doctors and Sky Nurses. The mission of this new squadron will be to conduct prompt and sustained medical service operations on or over any battlefield on Earth. Ultimately we will build larger flying Medical Airship Surgical Hospitals. They will be the size of Hindenburgs save we shall call them Nightingales. These mobile flying MASH’s will have room for 100 litter bound patients, a company of wounded warriors, all while filled with the finest medical gadgetry of our time. The Aeromedical Squadron will be capable of worldwide medical evacuation, remote hospital services, and emergency humanitarian rescue and relief during natural or unnatural disasters.

Your mention of Leonardo DaVinci as the Great Great Great Grandfather of Steampunk moves me greatly. Continual Brilliance! From team power to steam power. I had never considered the lineage thusly. Again… astounding genius on your part. Master DaVinci was indeed the most notable innovator of all time streams in the Aether and is both an Art and Science hero of mine. I had the fortunate opportunity, after High Tea one day in the city of Victoria on Vancouver Island, to witness the grandest exhibit of the Master’s works on weaponry. Truly Fascinating! I should hope to see that again someday, somewhere.

Well, my good Doctor, our correspondence is indeed quite stimulating and productive. My mind has been filled anew with ideas. I am much in agreement with your treatise on consequences. I should hope to pursue your thoughts and theories and thesis concerning the denied natures, instincts, and proprieties of Man. Perhaps as a first order approximation some clever Babbage Engine construct could in simulacra predict without ethical dilemma the experimentations you propose. I am myself currently running an admittedly much simpler Babbage Engine analytic to predict the doubling growth of the Empire it is thus far proving surprisingly accurate. It is predicting the date of doubling from 1000 citizens to 2000 citizens quite well. I will be very shortly ordering my Survey Fleet upon the four winds to once again plumb and ply the measure of our Empire in fact and actuality. It is my experience with theory and experimentations that (ethics or not) ultimately the real experiment must be conducted to know the essence of a thing and in order to truly validate any abstruse theory confabulated by Analytical Engine and/or Boolean Algebra. There end lay a conundrum. In such cases taken to ethical extent-- Does Truth trump Ethics or does Ethics trump Truth? Here there be Dragons, for here Many a good Doctor and Sky Captains have crossed the line to villainy… if there is such a line. devious smile

I may be out of contact for a bit, but Keep adding your inspired drawings and notes… I really like them!

in your service,

.................-~< Sky Marshall >~-.................
