Not a pun, really...wood is strongest in compression, weakest in tension/bending.

Compression of wood members is our friend.
BTW, I do timber framing for a living....always glad to see another woodworker out there.

Like a balloon frame house, the structure is kept rigid by the individual members supporting one another and exerting tension on each other. My hope is that will reduce bowing.

Good idea....any problems with out-thrust from loads on the frame?  You'll see what I mean....
