Introduction:

People know me by many names, all with macabre connotations:

To the Indochine gouverneurs, I am la terreur de tonkin, the "Terror of Tonkin."

To my targets, I am "Death with a Smile."

To the Five Great Families, I am "Wanted: Dead or Alive (but preferably very, very dead.)"

To everyone else, I am Ay-Leen the Peacemaker, Tonkinese assassin for hire. "The Peacemaker" aspect refers to the sense of eternal tranquility that I bring to my targets and the blissful satisfaction I give to my employers.

"The Peacemaker" also refers to my prize weapon, a Chinese-engineered steam- and amberic-powered hand cannon with which I blow people into the next life in a most satisfying manner.

For the last several years I had run a successful freelancing small business disposing of various unwanted fellows for a Large But Reasonable Fee. Life was good. I could afford shiny weapons with which I shot, gouged or pummeled through the heads, chests, or groins of various people (the latter task was the usual request of Disgruntled Ladies).

But suddenly, all of that has changed...

Who I'd like to meet:
Anyone who hopes to bestow eternal tranquility to their most unwanted and unfavored business partners/cheating husbands/unfaithful wives/greedy grown children/selfish bosses/feuding enemies. I charge a Large But Reasonable Fee (to be negotiated on a case-by-case basis).

Ay-leen the Peacemaker,

I am honored by your request for friendship.  I know it has been almost a week since your friend request and even longer since the Symposium.  I am sorry for the delay but I have been finishing up my thesis and had to write another paper on top of that.  I greatly enjoyed the Steampunk Symposium and hope you had as good a time as I did.  I look forward to our next meeting.

Keep the Peace,

Prof. Charles

Thanks for continuing to be so kind in regards to my writing. I would be interested in contributing the Ooku review, let me know if that is still in the realm of possibility of your site.

QUAINT #26: He Yufeng from “The Gallant Maid” by “Yanbei Xianren” (a.k.a. Wen K’ang)

Posted on July 13, 2011 at 3:45pm 0 Comments

From the Chinese film version of "The Gallant Maid" titled "The Heroine"

He Yufeng was created by “Yanbei Xianren” and appeared in Ernü ying xiong zhuan (The Gallant Maid, 1851-1879). “Yanbei Xianren” was the pseudonym of Wen K’ang (1798- 1872), a local official in Anhui who came from a prominent Manchu family and was appointed imperial agent to Lhasa. The Gallant Maid is little-known outside of China but is popular…

Beyond Victoriana #83 Enichari Corps: Slaves in the Ottoman Military — Guest Blog by Harry Markov

Posted on July 11, 2011 at 12:06pm 0 Comments

When I agreed to write the series about Bulgaria under the Ottoman rule as a suitable stage for the steampunk genre, I underestimated the challenge these articles present. I want to deliver a portrayal of a complicated and cruel span of five centuries in Bulgarian history. At the same time I’m dealing with controversial and sensitive material, given that the Ottoman occupation has hindered Bulgaria’s access to Europe during the time of the Industrial Revolution.… Continue

Story Excerpt:

Dorothy Winterman's "African Amazon" outfit

It is day 15 of our arduous journey through the veldts of Nigeria (or are we in Cameroon yet?). Our tracker Adeola has discovered new tracks and scraps of fibers from obviously foreign cloths. She can find a single iguana track amongst a bevy of crocodiles, this one can. We listen intently that these “men” are probably several hours, if not a day away. We find…
