So many people know that the best way to fix a "hunk-o-junk" (Older engine, boiler, etc) is to hit it with a sizable hammer. "You can always use cork as a stopper as well, this way you can hold a sing item of any length. If you really wanted to go all out, you could use a very low resistance (but long) spring and in effect make the cane like a pez despencer."
