Your idea of pink steam could actually be done. Or at least in its exhaust form as water vapor, since technically, steam is invisible.
I do volunteer work on an old triple-expansion steam engine which propels the last of the old "mosquito fleet" ferries of Puget Sound, WA. So I do know something about mechanical processes in addition to political and psychological ones.
Lots of puns there. We queers often joke about having our own fleet. Ferries/fairies. Plus, the favorite drink of both paleo- and neoVictorians is absinthe, the "green fairy." One type actually is red; the usual addition of water would make it pink, too!
