"I like to run the gamut, a little bit.  My longer stories tend to contain darker and grittier elements but with a positive theme.  There may be a little whimsy thrown in as well, but my shorter stories are generally quite whimsical…"

Col. Aloysius Hoofington (Ret.) replied to J.R.'s discussion Anachronisms in Steampunk Writing in the group The Aether Guild of Writers
"Ah, my mistake.  After rereading your OP you do mention that it was a different author.  But really, the same thing goes: he/she is a published author.  Maybe some people don't like the anachronisms, maybe I don't like the…"

Col. Aloysius Hoofington (Ret.) replied to J.R.'s discussion Anachronisms in Steampunk Writing in the group The Aether Guild of Writers
"Three thoughts on this topic:  First, I do like to see a well-written work that totally immerses me in the time period, language and phrasing included.  That being said, your audience is most certainly not 19th Century Britons, so some…"

Col. Aloysius Hoofington (Ret.) replied to The Contessa of Vintage's discussion Hell's Library is open.... in the group The Aether Guild of Writers
"I really like your story.  The concept in particular is very intriguing.  As far as Hell's Library goes, I would say a public library packed full of classic, vintage texts.  Except that the library has run out of space and one by…"

Col. Aloysius Hoofington (Ret.) replied to Bryce Raffle's discussion Research? How Do You Do It? in the group The Aether Guild of Writers
"Really I would say it depends on the type of story you're trying to write.  If you want to stay as true as possible to historical fact, then a lot of research is necessary.  If you're not worried about that, or if your story is…"

Col. Aloysius Hoofington (Ret.) replied to James R. Murray's discussion How fictional? in the group The Aether Guild of Writers
"I agree with Gary Alan Ruse.  Mixing genres can be a good thing, but at times bringing fantasy into a Steampunk story can seem like too much of a deus ex machina, or a cop-out.  I generally don't include fantasy or science fiction…"

Profile Information

Introduction
Since reading the works of Jules Verne as a young boy, I've been interested in the Steampunk genre, although I never knew it by that term until a couple years ago. For my hobbies, I read voraciously, and write voraciously, and hope one day to be published (voraciously). I do scale modelling, mostly in the Victorian era (stolid red- and khaki-coated soldiers facing off against brawny Huns in feldgrau, marvelous steam-ships and a planned fanciful airship). I even "steampunked" a thumb drive for my wife. There's just something about steam power, mechanical computers, and brass fittings that makes me feel at home, that makes me feel like the world is a fantastic place, full of high adventure.
