In her younger years Queen Victoria found herself and her entourage racing indoors after a rather sunny day had gone sour as the sun had already vanished behind dark clouds. Whilst they were storing their parasols and canes she noticed the small form of her youngest relative remaining outside. When she asked him to quickly get inside before the rain started he cooly stated without turning around "I much prefer this dreary world that only I see the beauty in to the one that seems to only revolve around you." Although her majesty knew he did not mean to slight her she still retorted, rather loudly, to those around her "Well then perhaps rather than your family's lands'
your earldom should be over all that is grey. You shall be The Earl Grey from now on."
The nobles laughed as Victoria began to make her way down the hall, but stopped abruptly when a glint caught her eye. The boy had turned under the darkened sky, the rain finally starting to come down gently around him, his face completely enveloped by the shadows. Only a bright off center circle could be seen glimmering past the rain and the darkness to the guests. Over sized as it was for the small boy he still wore the monocle handed down to him, light from some unknown source reflecting back towards the group. Victoria looked towards him nervously. While it was impossible to tell she had an eerie feeling that the widest smile she had ever seen was now lurking in the shadows before her. His voice rang clearly across the yard as if he was standing directly next to them,
"Put it in writing."
The Now

Left his family's care at a young age to make his own way in life. Returned after many silent years of "living in the grey parts of the world." With a new fortune to match his original family's entire worth the Earl describes his profession as that of a tea tradesmen, importing and exporting to countries around the world. Of course some have jested that it is a mock business that only imports tea for his personal use. As one known associate of the Earl once stated:
"It would take at least an entire fleet to keep up with his habits, I must say. But anyway, do you have any marbles or not?" - Lady Elizabeth Patch
Controlling his vast lands and assets from a hidden manor within the mountains of Scotland (not telling you which one) little else is known about the earl. He has been known to employ both sky pirate and mad scientists when it suits his fancy, however has yet to socialize much with either as they are 'the help'.
Reports have been made of a massive dark cloud that seems to appear either immediately before or after his arrival at any location. Some speculate that this may be linked to the fact that no one has ever seen the man in transit.
