The Asylum at The City of Lincoln, United Kingdom

September 13, 2013 at 3pm to September 15, 2013 at 12pm
Weekend at the Asylum is now in its fifth year.  One of the longest running steampunk events it is the largest festival of its kind in Europe.  Unlike hotel based conventions The Asylum takes over the historic quarter of a city which traces its history back to the Romans.  Which other event can boast a medieval castle and regency masonic hall as two of its venues.  Voted the best International Convention by Steampunk Chronicle the Asylum offers steampunk in a totally unique way.Exhibtions,…See More

Pride, Prejudice and Misconceptions

Posted on June 6, 2010 at 5:18am 4 Comments

When people look at steampunk and steampunks they are presented with inspiration and imagery straight from the Victorian period. They often ask is this some form of victorian re-enactment or an attempt to ressurect the Victorian period as a whole. The fact that steampunk is often described as neo-victorian people equate with “new victorians” and immediately assume that steampunks seek to adopt all aspects of the period, lock stock and two steaming barrels. On this occasion even wikipedia…

I have not updated my blog for a week due to pressures of work. Last weekend the Steampunk Art Exhibition closed in Oxford. We had a first class day with around fifty steampunks gathering to celebrate the passing of the event along with more than 2000 members of the general public! In the week since then the Exhibition has been packed up ready for shipping back to the relevant artists. A large portion of it is currently sitting at my home awaiting collection for conveyance to…

Announcing a steampunk design competition.

Posted on February 19, 2010 at 11:44am 0 Comments

The Victorian Steampunk Society is pleased to announce a design competition for the UK Weekend at the Asylum Festival.

Rather than tickets, tags, wristbands or badges we intend this year to hand out cast pewter tokens to festival participants. It is envisaged that these would then become a collectors item for future years. The 2010 fob should be in the size range of 15-30mm across and can be any shape. It should generally be around 2mm thick with a maximum thickness of…

Larger companies selling steampunk products.

My blog yesterday was about industrial production. Ordinarily whenever a company starts to mass produce items which are deliberately aimed at steampunks people immediately start to cry out "foul" and decry that it is either an attempt to cheapen our cherished scene, making it mainstream or to cash in our us exploiting our trusting natures.

I was surprised therefore when the two comments left were closer to my own personal thoughts on the…
