Profile Information

Introduction
I'm Nell Spaulding - antiquarian, art historian, and adventurer. Not long ago, my brother, the brilliant pathologist Ellsworth Emerson Spaulding, was murdered just on the verge of discovering the cure for neurasthenia, and his notes were stolen. I vow to find his stolen work and avenge his death. My other brother, Captain Geoffrey T. Spaulding, is a "famous explorer," but you'll never see us both in the same place. Captain Spaulding often pals around with the Professor, a shadowy figure with unknown motives.

I met my husband, Sam Buford, when I needed transportation to the Dakota to chase down a lead on Ellsworth's murderer. The lead didn't pan out, but his moral support and strength of character won my heart! Since then, we've wandered the world together, from treacherous snow-laden crossings through the Vail Pass to spooky journeys through the Roman catacombs. He also sometimes accompanies my brother Capt. Spaulding on "expeditions."

The 1890s was a decade of transition from beards to mustaches. By the time of the Spanish-American War, the combined effects of germ theory, the sanitation and health movements, and the Yale Crew cut had already decimated beardism. Therefore I suspect that issues with disease during the campaign had little additional effect on the prevalence of beards among soldiers. I am, however, not a historian, merely an enthusiast.

Naming your personna Captain Spaulding appeals to my dry sense of humor. Almost everybody is going to recognize the Groucho mustache and eyebrows, but not everyone is going to know who Captain Spaulding is. It's sort of an inside joke.

Speaking of inside jokes, you might appreciate this fine piece of headgear that I'm considering purchasing:
