"Do you think you could post pictures of what's wrong? I always replace the covers on my parasols once they're worn. It was quite common in the 19th century to do it because the fabric wasn't synthetic and so had a shorter life. I know…"

"I have found diagrams of the construction of more modern umbrellas. This one is decidedly not, with the wooden shaft and not the metal tube they use nowadays. I think I may be onto something though. I hope."

I got a nice old umbrella to modify into a parasol, at a garage sale. It seemed fine except the plaid fabric was getting weak and tearing a little and one of the ribs was a bit bent. It has a long wooden stem and a straight handle with a little carving and a ball chain loop, and the point at the top was missing any kind of cap, just the end of the stick coming through.
