STEAMPUNK AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

Texas Wild West Saloons

We recently had a fun event in Houston for the local Steampunk community. The Brass Ball, a DJed dance with multiple musicians and vendors was held Sunday July 27 at Mimms Martini and Wine bar on Montrose. You can see photos of the Brass Ball here in the blog post. This event had me thinking about Houston saloons in the 19th century. The main choice of drink in the saloon was whiskey, also called rotgut, sheep-dip, cactus juice, coffin varnish, and tarantula juice. In those days cowboys and…See More

Westernpunk Fun

I have seen different terms, cowpunk, weird west, and westernpunk, but I prefer the later. One of the greatest examples of Westernpunk is the old television show, Wild Wild West. Though a western, all the 19th century high tech…

Steampunk Comic Books by Maeve Alpin

Bryan Tallbot’s 1970’s Luther Arkwright series is considered the starting point for the modern era of Steampunk comics. It explores social and political inequities through a secret agent character, Luther Arkwright, who moves between parallels by pure force of will. The main setting is a parallel world where the English Civil War has been prolonged. Speaking of Bryan Tallbot, his Grandville series is total Steampunk. I’ll begin with it, followed by thirteen more.…

The captain and members of the Steamship Isabella along with Steam Powered Giraffe: The Spine, The John, and Rabbit in their robot makeup discussed Steampunk media at Clockwork.con. As fellow artist there are a lot of similarities between musicians and writers. The Steam Powered Giraffes said, “We write what we write and the Steampunk community embraced it.” To a novelist that would be the same as saying, I write from the heart. I love people who write from the heart whether it be literature…

Multicultural Steampunk by Maeve Alpin

As the hub of the industrial revolution, Victorian Britain and its culture will continue to be one of the strongest settings for Steampunk fiction. That said, it is not the only legitimate setting. After all, even Jules Verne’s most memorial character, Captain Nemo, mentioned more than western European aristocrats in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. "Do you think I'm unaware of the suffering people and oppressed races of this planet, the poor to be comforted, the victims to be avenged?"…

Hi Miss Alpin, I love ghost hunting! In fact I wish I could be there, but alas I am indisposed for now. I invite you to see my ghost hunting video I made here in Florida recently. More on the way, of course.  Go to

www.steampunkghostlytales.com to see my page and watch the short movie. It is  truly fun viewing.
