"I tell you, Zoe, we get a mechanic, get her runnin' again, hire a good pilot, maybe a cook - live like real people. Small crew, them as feel the need to be free, take jobs as they come, ain't never have to be under the heel of nobody ever again. No matter how long the arm of the Alliance might get... we'll just get ourselves a little further."

"But perfection is not the whole of Science. No, aesthetics are just as important, something our former colleagues in the Technocracy have forgotten. Science is of the human spirit; indeed, it is it's greatest expression. What is Science without the elegance of the spirit, without the grand and majestic beauty of existence? Remember the first tenent of the Kitab al Alacir: We create our own worlds. An ugly world only reflects its creator's image. I bid you, let not your works be ugly... Read. Think. Understand. And then Create!"

Steampunk is Orange

Posted on August 18, 2010 at 12:00pm 0 Comments

The word "steampunk" is rather like the word "orange" in that it can be applied in two ways:

As an adjective... That is to say the color orange.

Also as a noun... That is to say the fruit named for the color is it most commonly is.

Similarly, "steampunk" can be applied as a description of something with certain traits and also as a collective and individual term for the people who celebrate such things.

(While not correct, I will herafter use the lower case versions,… Continue

Steamcon 2009

Posted on October 27, 2009 at 12:00pm 0 Comments

Steamcon 2009 in Seattle, WA was an immense amount of fun. I honestly did not expect to attend until just days before the event, but my sister and wife conspired otherwise for my birthday.

Upon arrival at the Airport Marriot, I quickly got in line. The convention was selling out and quickly. I cannot say for sure, but I heard that the organizers were realistically expecting four to five hundred attendees and instead welcomed well-over twenty seven hundred. I'd call that a success,… Continue

Proofread Requested, Please

I have been given the happy task of summarizing steampunk (see excertp below). Any input would be appreciated.

"Steampunk. Sometimes referred to as Victorian Science Fiction, Gaslamp Fantasy, Steampulp, Weird West, Scientific Romance, et cetera. Most simply defined, it is a sub-genre of fantasy and speculative fiction set in an era where steam power maintains a place of prominence and has advanced in strange, even impossible, ways. The classic setting is 19th Century Earth, most… Continue

The Boilermug (WIP)

Posted on September 8, 2009 at 8:00pm 7 Comments

My desk at work needed a better coffee mug, so I improved upon the 20-ouncer that I was issued.

The mug was plastic with a metallic rim. I painted the plastic with my favorite bronze and gold-leafed the rim.

For the pressure gauge, I used a toy pirate compass (came in a pack of 4 for a $1), spiffied it up a bit and attached it with velcro (so I can remove it when washing the mug).

I also… Continue
