Simple question:  can a modern Oxford (or other long-sleeve button-down) shirt collar be folded, ironed and whatnot so as to appear to be a period-appropriate wing-collar shirt?  I can't find a legit…Continue

I just came up with this, and thought it might be best appreciated here. "Two otherwise unrelated bits of hardware fitting together perfectly for use in a project unrelated to the original intent of…Continue

Painting Gears Is Hard

For my current project, I have a train of large plastic gears, which are doing actual work.  They're green plastic, so I put some primer on them and spray painted them brass.  This has caused 3…Continue

I'm working on a project that involves a flat disk with a hole in the middle as a structural element.  OD=6", ID=4".  I think it would look nice if I carved it to look like a clock face, with Roman…Continue

Profile Information

Greetings! I am Thaddeus H. Oddington, scientist, adventurer, gentleman. In real life, I'm a mechanical engineer who builds life support systems for a living. I have had a lifelong interest in making things that do something, so my plan is for all my adornments to serve an actual purpose. I'm just getting started with not even a waistcoat to my name as yet.

Speaking of which, I'm trying out variations of my chosen appelation, so if you see one you particularly like or dislike, let me know.

The situation with your pockets being stitched up, I find that a practice that is common. In many ways! The very nerve!

A stitch un-picker should get those pockets open. It's quite common for the pockets to be sewn shut on new garments, especially high quality ones. It keeps the garment shape better. It took me ages to realise my nice blazer actually had *real* pockets and not just faux openings!
