I am so glad to find this site. A couple of years ago while looking for coat ideas on ebay, I found many of the ones I liked had the term Steampunk in their keywords. I googled it and fell in love with Jake Von Slatt's computers and Datamancer's well, Datamancer's everything.
I've been running around themed events (mostly Renaissance and Pirate) for 35 years, so finding a gorgeous new style really gets my creative juices percolating, and I have been following Steam Fashion and the like on Live Journal since.
Pyrate Daze on the Queen Mary in Oct 2009 was heaven for me - A combo of pirate and steam on a beautiful ship with Abney Park headlining.
This year it's SteamCon II or bust! I am particularly excited for the Weird West theme, as I appreciate anything that veers AWAY from Victorian England and people who say things like "that's not authentic Steampunk". Guess what? Steampunk never happened - we get to make it up as we go and make it anything we want!
(I also do not create entire characters with a backstory. That lost its kick after five or ten years - which means I've been over it for more than 20.)
I hope to find folks here that will be attending SteamCon, and perhaps arrange to meet-n-greet in person!
