I do not value form over function. Embellishment is one thing but If it doesn't do something i don't stick it on for embellishment just because a gear looks cool.
I believe the genius of some of the Victorian era items are their hidden functions and the glorious ways they are incorporated together. Simplicity,.style and functionality. Tools and devices shouldn't just work, they should be a pleasure to use. I try to remember that in a time where every gentleman was also an arm chair inventor and scientist your equipment also doubled as parlor entertainment and curiosities to stir conversation. Your home laboratory should be a delight and wonder to see even when not in use.
