A Ramble About Texting at the Table and Derogatory Language

Once upon a time, last month, a group of young people went to dinner before attending their high school prom. Of course they all had their smart phones in hand and they were texting each other at the table. One of the young men realized, far too late, that he was a little short of funds. He…

Mothers Tea in Early Spring

Sean led the way into his mother’s garden, Ernst trailing behind him with the tea tray. The Sun shone brightly out here, its warm summer rays slanting threw the few artfully placed trees to trail golden beams onto the lush grass. He wouldn’t say it, but Sean always wished he could take off his shoes here and walk barefoot with his toes cushioned by the grass like thick carpet. Between the flower beds the sound of soft humming could be heard, making Sean grin and Ernst flinch. The…

Beginnings...

Journal of Dr. Gebhard Brandt

13Aug1853

The article 5883 arrived from Norway today shortly after noon. I was disappointed to note that of the five specimens delivered only one seems viable, a slow but steady heart rate can still be detected beneath the petrified shell. If we can deduce a way to continue the incubation process we can begin our studies into the biological nature of a creature we once considered myth. With this discovery we who have…

Chapter 23 Episode 9 Conclusion

SCENE II:  The next room.  It is at least eight thousand square feet in area, and filled with all sorts of unusual devices.  There is no one present, other than friendly forces.  While Lady Tekla converses with Count Lanza and her husband, Regnad and Caroline focus their attention on identifying the equipment in question.

R.       Well, Caroline, what do you think?

C.       Ha.  Loaded question.  Hmmm...  I would have to say that those  (Points to two pieces…

To Write or Not to Write...

It has been so many years since I have written any fiction, I find myself wondering not only if anyone would like what I have to write but also if I even can anymore. then I wonder if I really care if others like my writing as I doubt I will be published at any time. And so I sit, knowing I should be working on O-Chem or cleaning, or sewing, or reading, and instead I find myself continuing the weeks long inter debate on whether or not I should transpose the story in my head onto paper (or…

to those who feel

When someone develops cancer, it is treated somewhat aggressively. Drs and nurses attack the cancerous cells with radiation and chemo, the two ninjas of the cancer world. I'm aware there are some other developments in the arena of cancer treatment that may turn out to be more potent and less harmful.

WEll, I know and have known lots of people who needed emotional help.

Why is there no attempt to treat Depression the same way? Not the same treatments, but with the same gusto? People I…

Five things you didn't know about steampunk

The Huffington Post had an article by Paul Di Filippo entitles “5 Things You Didn't Know About Steampunk” which was of course, reposted on a number of steampunk forums. Before we get into the kerfuffle that resulted, lets' go through that list of five things:

#1 Victorian science fiction isn't steampunk.

#2 The term “steampunk” is a sneering putdown.

#3 I wrote a…

Future European Vacation Pt. 2

After talking with a few people on here and on Welcome to Steampunk. I have come up with a route that pleases me the most. Please tell what you think and what places I should absolutely visit while at these wonderful cities. The trip starts off in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Second stop will be in the wonderful city of Copenhagen, Denmark where some well mannered frivolity will ensue. After my time there I will travel on to Stockholm, Sweden for some wonderful history, drinks and taking in…

Release day tomorrow!

I know it's not Steampunk, but it's been a big project getting everything ready.

The contract expired on my very first published novella, so when the rights reverted to me, I decided to dip my toes into the self-publishing waters. Got a cover, fixed that damn typo that had bothered me for 7 yrs, and today I finally finished wrestling with different content providers to upload it.

Tomorrow is the official re-release of NOT QUITE DEAD, a paranormal romantic comedy set in…

This Post is for the Birds!

This isn't exactly steampunk related, but it's cute, so I'm running with it. A few weeks back, my father, Blimprider, put up a post about some birds that had fallen from a tree that was removed from our yard. They were spotted in several locations around the yard, in the rose bushes, and even in the back of his truck which I believe he posted a picture of. A little…

The CR&A Roverhome: Description and Basic Diagram

Once again, a friend of mine has pointed out that there may be some people who might be interested in more information.  Specifically, about our roverhome, and while it does not figure prominently in the story I am currently telling, it is where we spend a good deal of time when we are in the United States.

I will now present an excerpt from my own notes, as well as a basic diagram of the roverhome's living space.

Gas-Lamp Fantasy Author

This will be an irregular blog for me, as my main source of writing on the internet will remain http://gaslampfantasy.wordpress.com. There is also the fact that i am actually not on the internet, and I can only post through having a very good friend who doesn't mind me using his computer and internet connection.

Anyway, my first humble announcement is that I have recently completed the novel Hoodoo Hobo. It is not a…

Future European Vacation

I am in need of assistance my fellow SPE staff and members. I have planned a rather extensive trip over to the continent of Europe. In the following passage I will show all the places I plan on visiting. While I have somewhat decided what the last three places are going to be on my list I have yet to decide what are going to be the first five cities I go to are. Here is the full list of the countries and major cities I plan on seeing. Edinburgh Scotland, London England, Barcelona…
